Summary

The powerful, dramatic story of how a successful Hollywood set designer whose identity was deeply rooted in his homosexuality came to be suddenly and utterly transformed by the power of the gospel。

When Becket Cook moved from Dallas to Los Angeles after college, he discovered a socially progressive, liberal town that embraced not only his creative side but also his homosexuality。 He devoted his time to growing his career as a successful set designer and to finding "the one" man who would fill his heart。 His life centered around celebrity-filled Hollywood parties and he traveled to society hot-spots around the world--until a chance encounter with a pastor at an LA coffee shop one morning changed everything。

In A Change of Affection, Becket Cook shares his testimony as someone who was transformed by the power of the gospel。 His dramatic conversion to Christianity and subsequent seminary training inform his views on homosexuality--personally, biblically, theologically, and culturally--and his compelling book guides readers through this complex and controversial issue while revealing how to lovingly engage with those who disagree。

Provocative, genuine, and deeply faithful, A Change of Affection is a timely and indispensable resource for anyone who desires to understand more fully one of the most common and difficult stumbling blocks to faithfully following Christ today。

Absolutely incredible。 I’ll be reading this one again, and I’ll come back later to write a more detailed review! In the meantime, though, I would highly commend this book to anyone following Jesus。

"For all have sinned"。。。 I think we too often condemn when we are so guilty ourselves。 "Christ died for the ungodly。"Cook does a wonderful job explaining the inner workings/thought process of someone who struggles with homosexuality without condoning it as an acceptable lifestyle。 He also beautifully presents the good news of Jesus! Regardless of the reader’s stance on Christianity and historical interpretation of Scripture, Cook’s story is one to ponder and even marvel at considering the time and place in which it occurred。 His honesty in not knowing major questions that arise concerning homosexuality counters the depth of Scripture he includes (none of which include the “go to” homosexuality verses。) His tone is gracious and conversational, which (negatively) made the writing too much like verbal speech sometimes, which i Regardless of the reader’s stance on Christianity and historical interpretation of Scripture, Cook’s story is one to ponder and even marvel at considering the time and place in which it occurred。 His honesty in not knowing major questions that arise concerning homosexuality counters the depth of Scripture he includes (none of which include the “go to” homosexuality verses。) His tone is gracious and conversational, which (negatively) made the writing too much like verbal speech sometimes, which is my only critique。 。。。more

I saw this guy give his testimony at a Search for Jesus online conference a few months back, and I knew I had to read his book。 Oh。 My。 Word! Everyone should read this book。 I'm not even kidding, not even a little。 Was Becket born gay? Did he learn same-sex attraction somehow? It doesn't even matter to him, because a recovering homosexual born again pastor invited him to his church one Sunday, and Becket met and fell in love with Jesus (and not in any weird, sexual way)。 Jesus gave him a new hea I saw this guy give his testimony at a Search for Jesus online conference a few months back, and I knew I had to read his book。 Oh。 My。 Word! It doesn't even matter to him, because a recovering homosexual born again pastor invited him to his church one Sunday, and Becket met and fell in love with Jesus (and not in any weird, sexual way)。 Jesus gave him a new heart and a new life。 He's not married now with six kids。 He still struggles with same-sex attraction, but he doesn't let it win。 He submits his will and his wants to God in obedience because his relationship with God is more important to him。 Becket learned that it doesn't matter HOW he was born the first time。 He was born into Jesus the second time, and Jesus CHANGED him from the inside out。 。。。 And that's what we ALL need to know when it comes to sin。 We're all born with a sin nature that wants to draw us away from God and His path。 But we can all be born AGAIN into Jesus and His way of living。 He WILL change us, if we let Him。 Some of you won’t be comfortable reading Becket’s story。 He talks about falling in love with men and being sexually attracted to them and even kissing them (he doesn't talk about the other stuff, but you understand 。。。)。 That's what his life was before Jesus。 But he also talks about his life after Jesus - a life of celibacy and devotion to the only One who can truly fulfill every desire of our hearts。 So, just try to get over yourselves long enough to truly listen to Becket’s story。 Listen to his changed heart。 You might just learn something about how God can change your heart too。 It doesn't matter if you were born that way; you don't have to stay that way。 Jesus can help! ❤️ 。。。more

This is an amazing story of putting aside all the other things you find your identity in and embracing a new identity。 I read a snippet of Becket's story in Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth, and it inspired me to listen to the audiobook version。 I'm so glad I did! One man’s journey in reconciling his sexuality to his religion。 While I’m not sure if I agree with the authors conclusion I do respect him for the choice that he made。 As a gay Christian myself, I struggle with reconciling the presupposed preoccupations of the traditional Christianity of my parents to the Christianity that I experience and believe。 I know someone else who made the same decision as the author。 Again, not sure if I agree, but I do understand。 I will pray for him。 This book is NOT One man’s journey in reconciling his sexuality to his religion。 While I’m not sure if I agree with the authors conclusion I do respect him for the choice that he made。 As a gay Christian myself, I struggle with reconciling the presupposed preoccupations of the traditional Christianity of my parents to the Christianity that I experience and believe。 I know someone else who made the same decision as the author。 Again, not sure if I agree, but I do understand。 I will pray for him。 This book is NOT homophobic, nor does it tell you what to believe。 All it does is provide one mans perspective based on his interpretation of the Bible。 。。。more

Everyone should read this book。 Both people with same sex attraction and straight people as well。 This book was funny, it was serious, and it was very convicting。 His honesty and his love for others bleed through the pages。May God continue helping him through this journey。

Great book!!! It’s amazing to see God’s redemptive work in the life of Becket。 Not only that, but I think the way he explains his current views on homosexuality are theologically correct and expressed intelligently loving。 I was able to relate so much through out the book that it did a great job at reminding me of the great mercies of our Lord Jesus Christ。

Excellent book! I can’t say enough good things about this book。 Informative, personal, and points you to Jesus and the Word constantly!

This book is honest, vulnerable, kind and true。 Becket shares his story and journey of coming to know Jesus in such an inviting and moving way。 I love how the second half of the book is part mini-sermons, part practical teaching。 His love for God radiates on every page on his love for people。

This book brought me to tears - so full of passionate love for Christ。 Becket is engaging, intelligent, thoughtful, and clear - and you can finish his book in an afternoon! Would highly recommend。

Amazing testimony from a man who’s identity was once his sexuality, to now living an obedient life for Christ。 It is full of scripture, and practical。 Highly recommend to all Christians to know how to speak truth in love to the LGBT community。

AmazingReally a fantastic book。 We not only see Becket's transformation out of the homosexual lifestyle by the power of the Gospel, we get to see how he help others answer questions in regards to this sensitive topic。 You can sense the love coming out of this book and it is hard to put down。 Highly recommended。 AmazingReally a fantastic book。 We not only see Becket's transformation out of the homosexual lifestyle by the power of the Gospel, we get to see how he help others answer questions in regards to this sensitive topic。 You can sense the love coming out of this book and it is hard to put down。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Becket Cook shares his true account of real life change because of God and His salvation and the power of The Holy Spirit! Loving, not condemning。 Truthful, not preachy。 Personal, but not provocative。 I enjoyed this so much and thoroughly recommend it!

Amazing!!!If you bought this book thinking that this is a conventional story of salvation, let me tell you you're misguided, in this book Beckett uses his story to tell us other story about haw Jesus loves us despite our flaws, sins and many defects, it's about the kind of love from God that Change us completely。 Definitely recommend to read。 Amazing!!!If you bought this book thinking that this is a conventional story of salvation, let me tell you you're misguided, in this book Beckett uses his story to tell us other story about haw Jesus loves us despite our flaws, sins and many defects, it's about the kind of love from God that Change us completely。 Definitely recommend to read。 。。。more

This book is a strong story that puts God first。 There’s no question - he has been changed by the grace of God。 I didn’t fully enjoy the way the story was presented - it didn’t keep my interest for long。 I was in and out of being super “yes!” about it and not interested。

A Change of Affection is definitely a good read for any person interested in sound, biblical Christianity, as well as Christians who are deep in their walk with the LORD。 The concepts of God’s Word are easily portrayed here by the author, Becket Cook, and the structure of the book itself is done well。 The first half is his autobiography of life before discovering who Jesus really is, and the latter half is him answering commonly asked questions about homosexuality and where it stands with Christ A Change of Affection is definitely a good read for any person interested in sound, biblical Christianity, as well as Christians who are deep in their walk with the LORD。 The concepts of God’s Word are easily portrayed here by the author, Becket Cook, and the structure of the book itself is done well。 The first half is his autobiography of life before discovering who Jesus really is, and the latter half is him answering commonly asked questions about homosexuality and where it stands with Christ。 How are we Christians (sinners saved by grace) supposed to treat people who are actively practicing homosexuality (sinners who are not saved。。。yet)? This is definitely a book I recommend to anybody struggling with homosexuality or Christians wrestling with what to do about friends and family who are struggling。 With Cook’s real life experiences in one of the capitals of homosexuality (Los Angeles) combined with him backing up his evidence 99% from the Bible itself, I would think it’s safe to say that he is definitely on the right track。 。。。more

“No one enters Narnia the same way”This idea as it relates to CS Lewis’ children’s stories is a metaphor for the way people enter the kingdom of God。 There is not a set way。 In the span of a few days, I listened to an atheist who became a Christian say that it was only BECAUSE the xian sharing Jesus with him never invited him to church that he stayed around to hear the gospel and experience their unconditional love。 That’s one way in。 Beckett entered by a different door。 On a “chance” encounter “No one enters Narnia the same way”This idea as it relates to CS Lewis’ children’s stories is a metaphor for the way people enter the kingdom of God。 There is not a set way。 In the span of a few days, I listened to an atheist who became a Christian say that it was only BECAUSE the xian sharing Jesus with him never invited him to church that he stayed around to hear the gospel and experience their unconditional love。 That’s one way in。 Beckett entered by a different door。 On a “chance” encounter with a stranger at a coffee shop- he showed up at church, heard a sermon from Ronans 7- and his entire life shifted on a dime。 This was a refreshing reminder of how God can so radically change someone in an instant。。。。but also, Beckett writes about the need for ling term patience and perseverance in waiting for the Holy Spirit to work。 One of my favorite parts is a revelation at the end of the book。 Turns out- Beckett’s conversion wasn’t an instant。 His sister-in-law had been patiently praying for him consistently for 20 years as she took opportunities to connect with him relationally and live unconditionally。 This is a worthwhile read。 。。。more
